SM Cinema pays homage to the 100th anniversary of PH film with hand-painted movie billboards

SM Cinema, a firm believer of Filipino craft celebrates the 100th Year of Philippine Film Industry with a showcase that pays homage to Philippine art and film.

With the opening of the Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino (PPP) festival which coincides with the centennial of Philippine Film, SM Cinema Cinema commissioned the last-standing producer of hand-painted acrylic movie billboards Sagmit Enterprises.

Before fully shifting into digital formats, movies were promoted through hand-painted movie posters displayed on movie theaters’ facades. But as technology advanced, billboards were replaced with LED screens from where digital movie art are flashed from. Hand-painted movie billboards slowly faded into the background.

To celebrate the 100th year of Filipino film while highlighting Pinoy ingenuity, SM Cinema commissioned Sagmit Enterprises to render PPP entries’ official movie posters into hand-painted billboards which stand 6ft tall.

PPP entries, The Panti Sisters, Open, LSS, Cuddle Weather, I’m Ellenya L., Watch Me Kill, G!, Circa, Lola Igna, and Pagbali hand-painted movie posters are displayed at SM Cinema North Edsa, SM Cinema Megamall and SM Cinema Mall of Asia until September 24.

PPP entries are showing at all of SM Cinema’s 65 branches nationwide from Sept 13 to 19.
