Mondelēz International in the Philippines, in partnership with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB) today lead the launch of the fifth and final episode of the Miming and Friends sustainability series, titled The Greenhouse Monster Part 2. Miming and Friends is an animated Youtube channel, which has created the series on sustainability since 2022 together with ocean conservancy group Save Philippine Seas and snacks company Mondelēz International.
The launch, held at LOLA Cafe Broadway in Quezon City, marks the completion of a pioneering five-episode animated miniseries that uses Filipino storytelling to educate children and families about responsible waste management—from waste segregation and plastic recycling to composting and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
A Memorandum of Agreement signing between Mondelēz International and DENR-EMB was also held during the event, formalizing the partnership’s shared commitment to promoting environmental education and sustainable habits among Filipino communities.
A Collaborative Model for Environmental Education
The sustainability series, which launched in 2022, is a collaboration between Mondelēz International Philippines, Save Philippine Seas, and the creators of Miming and Friends—Ramon del Prado and Meryll Yan of Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental. The partnership brings together corporate sustainability commitment, scientific accuracy, and creative storytelling to make environmental education accessible to Filipino families.
This July 2026, Miming and Friends was also chosen as one of the Philippine representatives for the SEA Creators Meet-up of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).
“Miming and Friends shows that learning about the environment doesn’t have to be scary or complicated. By placing sustainability in the hands of children and their families —through fun, Filipino storytelling—we can hopefully help build habits that last across generations,” says Caitlin Punzalan, Corporate and Government Affairs Lead, Mondelēz International in the Philippines.
Addressing the Philippines’ Waste Crisis Through Storytelling
The Philippines is a pioneer in Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) legislation in Southeast Asia, having enacted Republic Act No. 11898 or the Extended Producer Responsibility Act of 2022. This is a landmark law that requires large enterprises to take responsibility for the recovery and proper diversion of their post-consumer plastic packaging waste.
As part of its compliance and commitment to the EPR framework, Mondelēz International developed the Miming and Friends sustainability series as its contribution to EPR information, education, and communication using engaging, Filipino-made animation to help teach children and families about responsible waste management, recycling, and waste segregation in a format that resonates with young audiences.
In The Greenhouse Monster Part 2, the animated characters discover that the greenhouse monster threatening their island on Episode 4 was in fact created by excessive human pollution. They then work together as a community to implement waste sorting, recycling, and composting solutions. The episode demonstrates how collective small actions can create meaningful environmental change.
Growing Impact
Since its establishment in 2020, Miming and Friends has grown to over 121,000 YouTube subscribers—earning YouTube’s Silver Play Button in January 2026—with hundreds of thousands of cumulative views. The channel’s content is now used as learning tools by schools, NGOs, teachers, and DENR itself through its Facebook page.
“Animation is powerful! Kids listen, parents learn alongside them. By bringing science into storytelling, we help more families understand why waste segregation matters, how plastics affect oceans, and what they can do in their communities,” shares Anna Oposa, Executive Director and Chief Mermaid, of Save Philippine Seas.
A Call for Collective Action
The completion of the five-episode series underscores the power of cross-sector collaboration in addressing environmental challenges. With government, the private sector, civil society, and creative communities working together, the partnership demonstrates a scalable model for environmental education that can inspire action beyond the screen.
