Filipino entries triumph and made it to the top 50 of the Next-Image Awards

World renowned photographer, Alec Soth, said “when you start photography, my advice is to try every kind of photography that you can sport, black-and-white, street photography, etc.… and then listen to your voice and pursue what you need to pursue. One cool thing about the Huawei Next-Image Awards is that they allow experimentation, which ties in with this advice”.
Huawei is known for leading the technology in smartphone photography and as a brand that makes everything possible, its vision is to always expand on visual expression. Huawei wants people to continue capturing the world and how they see it in their own perspective. This resulted to the Next Image Awards, a competition where people around the world can show how they express themselves and art through the power of photography.

Leading up to the final round of the Next-Image Awards, Huawei hold local competitions to further strengthen the brand’s vision and to allow its consumers an expert in photography. The increasing popularity of mobile photography was evident this 2018 because the total number of submissions compared last 2017 doubled up. The Philippines alone, submitted a total of 10,431 entries from 3,378 attendees. The most popular categories that Filipinos used was “Hello Life, Good Night, Faces, Check-in, Timeline and Storyboard”.

Several entries from the Philippines caught the attention of many and made it to the Top 50 runner ups of this year’s Next-Image Awards. A photo submitted by Bernard Pasatiempo Recirdo II is an example of how Huawei and Filipinos share a similarity – making things possible even if it seems impossible. Using a Huawei Nova 2i, Bernard was able to capture how eager the kids are in trying to read a book despite having only a candle light to support how they read. It was clearly shown that both kids won’t let the difficulty in their lives stop them from learning.

Another entry is from Mark Daiz, using a Huawei Mate 8, Mark was able to show the many sides of how people deal with depression. Depression is an issue that most people should talk about. In the photo, Mark was able to show how people with mental illness face their everyday lives.

Speaking about the winning image, Mark Lubell, Executive Director of the International Center of Photography, said “This image is terrific and mysterious. The light bears down splitting the image into two halves of dark, in the spotlight a man walks away from us. We want to learn more. We look at this image two or three times. It pulls us in. It answers and creates questions at the same time.”
Karin Rehn-Kaufmann, Art Director and Chief Representative Leica Galleries International, said “The winning picture is a little like a fairytale. You have to look several times at the picture and it still keeps a secret.”
