Kingston XS2000: Your Pocketable Storage Monster

For many years I’ve used a large-capacity external drive to store my publishing files, large presentations from my previous jobs, important photos, videos, and other digital mementos, as well as my favorite music and movie files. These kinds of space-hungry files can grow quite quickly and can fill up space on my workstation’s internal drive in no time.

While file sharing via the cloud is cheap enough and really normal these days, the ease of being able to take your work on this drive and plug it into a computer in another location, means that you don’t need to worry about whether the host computer has enough internal drive space to accommodate your massive files.

So, if you regularly need to move large files between computers or want a travel backup for your laptop, you should get a speedy portable SSD. Yes, they’re more expensive than portable HDDs, but because they have no moving parts, they’re inherently faster and more durable.

One of the latest portable SSDs available in the local market now is Kingston’s XS2000, with the following key features:

  • With lightning-fast transfer speeds of up to 2,000MB/s
  • Small, lightweight, on-the-go storage.
  • IP55 rating, shockproof with an included removable rubber sleeve.

Yep, the headline says it all. If you are looking for that kind of external SSD, this little guy does it all. But of course, let’s take a deeper look.

First, for XS2000 to hit 2000Gbps maximum performance, you will need a high-end laptop or PC that supports the newest and the fastest version of USB 3.2 (Gen 2×2). So, in order to get the max of this storage device, you might need to double check your rig. My system doesn’t support USB 3.2 Gen 2×2, so my sequential read and write speeds were just under 900MB/s, which is still really fast for an external storage drive. But if you were expecting the advertised speeds, it’s something to keep in mind.

Sure, the XS2000 is a tad wider and thicker than your daily USB flash disk. But I was very surprised that it is smaller than a pack of pocket-size tissue papers! The build quality is also fairly decent, and it will fit in any pocket quite easily. However, unlike an average USB flash drive, it’s a not a standalone device. This one needs a type-C cable, which is included when you buy this device. Then if you prefer protection over size, there’s an included protective rubber cover. This sleeve perfectly fit the device and has a very smooth and quality feeling.

We live in a world where privacy became friable and is somehow accessible with remarkable ease. That is why, I always appreciate, even if little involvement of some security or encryption features. The device, however, lacks any built-in encryption, software, or hardware.

The Kingston XS2000 is a solid product. My only issue with it is that it requires USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 to achieve the best performance. If your system does support its max performance, then yeah, get it. But it still performs well with other USB standards, like USB 3.1 Gen 2. For the security feature, I don’t mind that much, because I can always use Microsoft’s BitLocker or Apple’s encrypted APFS filesystem to encrypt the drive.

PROS:

  • Very fast read and write speeds
  • Tiny size, portability
  • Durable, water resistant, and dust resistant

CONS:

  • Requires USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 for best performance
  • No built-in encryption options
