Phone-tography with the Huawei P20

Just the end of March, Huawei took to the stage in Paris to show off the new P20 series. The spotlight was, of course, on the P20 Pro with its unusual third camera, but the “regular” version was not to be left out.

Though it lacks the tertiary sensor that is present in the flagship smartphone, the P20 sports most of the same features.

Sure it doesn’t have the P20 Pro’s 40-megapixel camera, but the P20 isn’t that far behind the premium camera phone on lens count because it still has two. And, for what it’s worth, both were co-engineered by German optics titan Leica as well.

Huawei P20 has a 12-megapixel color snapper on the rear. With a 1/2.3in sensor (that’s larger than you usually get on a smartphone), with pixels that are 1.55um in size, and with an aperture of f/1.6 on the mono camera, plus 4-in-1 hybrid focus, Huawei P20 promises to deliver stunning results.

The 12-megapixel RGB lens is paired with a 20-megapixel monochrome sensor. This is use to apply depth-mapping to portraits, to capture detail-rich black-and-white photos, and to improve the appearance of color photos as well.

AI MASTER

In addition to the two Leica Summilux lenses on the back, Huawei P20 has a neural processing unit on the Kirin chipset, which provides the AI capability to the camera app. Huawei claims the Master AI function of the camera helps you become a better photographer, with suggestions and automatic mode-switching based on what the A.I.-powered dual cameras recognize.

While the Mate 10 Pro could discern between 13 different scene-recognition modes, the P20 series up the ante by identifying 19 different common scenes, automatically adjust your settings for no-fail photos. So whether it is selfies, OOTDs, places you visit, and even the food you ate, P20 cameras recognize the scene you are framing and color balance your photograph automatically. Now you can take pictures that are Instagram worthy!

For instance, if you aim the camera at a flower, it will switch on Flower Mode and automatically apply settings that should get a better shot of an elegant and vivid-colored thing.
When aimed at people, it switched into Portrait Mode, with bokeh effect that is noticeable and that adds a professional vibe.

The 2x hybrid zoom often self-activates when taking a close-up of something, offering a zoomed shot without losing quality.

With A.I.-Assisted Composition, P20 will instantly offer intelligent layout suggestions to improve your framing, bringing your images up to professional standards without any extra effort.

It also helps by adding a horizontal line to the viewfinder to ensure the shot is level.

With AIS and 4D Predictive Focus, the P20 also allows its users to conveniently capture any moving actions clearer, with less shake and distortion.

SUPER NIGHT MODE

The camera also includes improved low light capabilities. Together with AI Image Stabilization (AIS), say goodbye to grain and welcome bright and blur-free subjects even in super low light. Now, you can embrace night photography, without the need for a tripod or supernaturally still hands, using the handheld AI-assisted new Super Night Mode.

If the phone detects that you’re holding it, it only counts 6 seconds of exposure before finalizing the photo. If the phone is in a more stable position, it counts 18 seconds. The results are a little surreal, but undoubtedly beautiful.

Beauty level 3 and bokeh on results in a flatteringly realistic self-portrait that looks like it was shot on an SLR.

SELFIE to SELF-PORTRAIT

The 24MP at f/2.0 Lecia-branded front camera is pretty good, taking pictures that are reasonably sharp with good colors. Details are a bit soft, but this is usually okay for selfies.

And with 3D Portrait Lighting and AI beautification, you can now turn your selfies into breathtaking portraits.

It’s like having your very own professional studio where you can play with several lighting modes built to complement your best features.

VIDEO CAPABILITIES

The P20 supports video recording up to 4K at 30 frames-per-second.

You’ll also find a super slow motion feature on this phone, wherein you can increase your camera’s frame rate to 960fps for 0.2 seconds – Matrix-like effect!

Well, a good camera is a good camera, whether or not you have an extra one offering wide-angle, extra zoom, or say, x-ray vision. With similar performance to the Mate 10 Pro, the P20 puts out great photos in most lighting conditions, with excellent color reproduction and sharp detail. Truly, Huawei continues to take the lead on smartphone photography with the Huawei P20 series.
