A Korean businessman who is actively engaged in serving the poor and the leprosy afflicted in the Philippines for more than two decades was awarded the Korea National Orders of Merits by the South Korean government.
Jae Jung Jang, founder of Sorok Uni Foundation, has been awarded last September 2017 by SoKor President Jae In Moon for serving Filipinos affected by Leprosy and homeless street people in the Philippines for 20 years. His non-profit organization works for and with Filipinos affected by Leprosy and homeless urban and rural poor.
Mr. Jang, who started from humble beginnings, attained success through hard work. His family was not affluent and he had studied as a scholar in Korea Maritime University. Later on, Mr. Jang became a ship captain and was able to provide for his family.
He came to the Philippines in 1984, during one of the most turbulent years in the country. He experienced People’s Power Revolution in 1986. In the same year, he, founded Uni-Ship Inc., a shipping, logistics and IT company, in Manila. Six years later, Jang, he founded Sorok Uni Foundation.
He envisions the Philippines to become a country without forgotten neighbors. According to Mr. Jang, the homeless, the abandoned and the rejected lepers need to be given another chance in life. They have to be inspired to hope, and they also need to feel the love of the Lord through the kindness of their fellow human beings.
As a Christian, Mr. Jang believes that Jesus came to this world to take care of those who are suffering like those forgotten neighbors. The Lord didn’t come for the healthy and rich.
Mr. Jang hopes others would also give love to the weak and needy, he hopes that the Philippine society will give fair chance and opportunity in life to all regardless of their situation or condition.
