Riot Games Unveils VCT 2027: A New Tournament-Driven Future for VALORANT Esports

Riot Games has unveiled a bold new vision for the VALORANT Champions Tour (VCT), setting the stage for a transformative era in competitive VALORANT beginning in 2027. The revamped ecosystem will prioritize tournaments over traditional league play, introduce open qualification to global events, expand live competitions across more cities worldwide, and establish a refreshed partnership model designed to balance opportunity with stability.

A Tournament-First Ecosystem

Starting in 2027, the VCT will fully transition into a tournament-first structure. Every match will carry meaningful stakes, ensuring that competition remains high-intensity from the very beginning of the season. Open qualifiers will serve as the entry point for aspiring teams, feeding into regional tournaments that culminate in live finals hosted in new cities each year. These tournaments will directly determine qualification for the prestigious Masters and Champions events, creating a clear and merit-based pathway to the global stage.

This shift represents a significant departure from the league-based system, emphasizing progression through performance rather than placement in a closed circuit. Riot Games aims to deliver a more dynamic and engaging competitive environment where every team, regardless of prior status, has a chance to rise.

Open Qualification to Global Events

For the first time in VCT history, any team will be able to qualify for Masters and Champions through open qualifiers. This democratization of access ensures that rising talent can compete alongside established organizations, with winning teams advancing directly to the biggest stages in VALORANT esports. Alongside prestige, financial incentives will play a key role: tournaments will feature robust prize pools totaling over $6 million annually, with fully funded travel for teams competing in global events.

Riot Games has already demonstrated its commitment to supporting teams financially. In 2025 alone, the company shared over $86 million in revenue from digital goods with VCT organizations. The new model builds on this foundation, offering both partner and non-partner teams meaningful opportunities to earn across multiple events.

Introducing VCT Cups

Replacing traditional league play, VCT Cups will become the cornerstone of regional competition. These LAN-based tournaments will feature open qualification pathways, conclude with live finals in new host cities, and directly seed teams into Masters and Champions. By centering competition around Cups, Riot Games ensures that regional play remains vibrant, accessible, and closely tied to the global circuit.

Expanded Global Footprint

The VCT 2027 season will bring VALORANT esports closer to fans than ever before. Riot Games plans to host more than 20 tournaments annually across 16 or more cities worldwide. Each region will feature multiple LAN events throughout the season, including Cups, Kickoff tournaments, and international competitions. This expanded footprint reflects Riot’s commitment to growing VALORANT esports as a truly global phenomenon, with live events designed to engage diverse communities and showcase talent across continents.

A New Two-Year Partnership Model

While open qualification expands opportunities for non-partnered teams, Riot Games is also refreshing its partnership system to ensure stability for established organizations. Beginning in 2027, partnerships will operate on a two-year cycle with updated selection criteria. Partner teams will benefit from guaranteed base payments, performance bonuses tied to competitive and community goals, and revenue opportunities through in-game Team Capsules that allow fans to support their favorite organizations directly.

Additionally, partner teams will enjoy direct seeding into later rounds of qualifiers, providing increased exposure and competitive stability. Riot Games has outlined clear criteria for partnership applications, including commitment to growing the VALORANT community, resonance with fandom and content, business sustainability, operational excellence, and competitive success.

Opportunities for Non-Partnered Teams

Non-partnered teams will not be left behind in this new ecosystem. Riot Games has designed VCT 2027 to ensure that top-performing non-partner teams can earn meaningful rewards and, in some cases, even outperform lower-ranked partner teams. Benefits include cash incentives tied to qualification at each stage, access to prize pools across regional and global events, financial support for travel, and faster payout cycles to sustain operations throughout the season. This model creates a more balanced competitive landscape, where performance on the server directly translates into opportunity and financial support.

A Unified System

At the heart of VCT 2027 is a unified system where all teams compete within a single tier of competition. This structure removes barriers for rising talent and accelerates progression to the global stage. Open qualifiers will serve as the starting point for every team’s journey, with multiple qualification opportunities throughout the year. From there, teams can advance into regional tournaments, build momentum across competitive cycles, and ultimately qualify for Masters and Champions.

Statement from Riot Games

Leo Faria, Global Head of VALORANT Esports at Riot Games, emphasized the vision behind this transformation: “VCT 2027 is about reimagining how teams compete and how fans experience VALORANT esports. By shifting to a tournament-driven system with open access to our biggest events, we’re creating a more dynamic, high-stakes ecosystem where every match matters and every team has a shot at the global stage.”

Looking Ahead

With over 20 tournaments planned annually, spanning more than 16 cities worldwide, VCT 2027 promises to deliver higher stakes, faster progression, and greater competitive opportunity than ever before. Riot Games’ commitment to expanding live events, supporting both partner and non-partner teams, and fostering open qualification pathways marks a new chapter in VALORANT esports. More details on regional formats, qualification paths, and event locations will be shared in the lead-up to Champions.
