Lazada plays transformative role in ensuring that the (digital) future is female

Lazada’s Head of Traffic, Pauline Castro

In celebration of National Women’s Month this March, top online lifestyle destination Lazada shared its efforts in empowering women in the digital space in a recently held forum at the FEU Tech Innovation Center in Manila.

Titled “#Women2023: Women Forging the Digital Future,” the event was organized by SPARK! Philippines, a nonprofit organization that advocates for the empowerment of women, LGBTQ+ and other marginalized sectors. The organization lauded Lazada for championing strong female leaders in eCommerce and technology, and featured  Lazada Head of Traffic Pauline Castro share her  “Equal in Digital” journey. Other panelists included were Google Philippines Country Senator Loren Legarda and Commission on Human Rights Executive Director Atty. Jacqueline Ann de Guia.

Castro’s talk entitled “#LifeAtLazada: Empowering Women Through Digital Transformation” touched on the influential role of technology in the lives of women today. She noted how Lazada continues to reshape the lives of its female entrepreneurs, customers, and employees.

“Lazada is in the business of building businesses,” Castro said, underscoring the group’s efforts in empowering its female entrepreneurs. “Women today are relying a lot on digitizing business using our seller app, which is why we make it easy and flexible. We are also proud of our AI-powered business advisor, and we have all the tools and resources to propel their learning and success.”

Castro likewise discussed how Lazada emboldens its female customers. LazLook and LazBeauty, she said, was designed to cater to women shoppers. “We are redefining Filipino fashion and beauty by working hard on innovations that merge the shopping experience with social and entertainment.”

Lastly, Castro shared how Lazada embodies inclusivity. She noted that majority of the Lazada Philippines workforce is female, as the group fully embraces equity and promotes equality.

“In Lazada, we always say people first. We live seriously, work happily, and upskill our employees,” Castro said, before highlighting Lazada’s “culture of listening and collaboration.”

“Our culture of experimentation is very powerful because this is a space where I experience fresh grads or new joiners having equal access to data and are given the chance to generate their own ideas,” she said. “We strive to build a future workforce and create opportunities planning for success.”

Castro also talked about other manifestations of inclusivity at Lazada, including the launch of its own data science scholarship program. The “Lazada x For The Women (FTW) Data Science Scholarship” initiative is committed to offering data science training to promising young women looking to build a career in tech.

Lazada has a running partnership with FEU on vouchering activities that will allow students to have easier access to their needs and offer e-commerce masterclasses to help them bolster their skills.
