New Year’s resolutions for pet parents to level up their pet care routine

Having a pet is both a privilege and a responsibility, so all fur parents aspire to be loving and responsible pet owners. Being a pet parent means providing the right care and giving enough personal attention to pets so that they grow up to be happy, healthy companions.

Here are some suggested new years’ resolutions for pet owners that may help make their pets’ lives even better this year.

  • Fight pet obesity by being more active

Walking pets daily is an ideal way to give them the exercise they need. Playtime could also be considered exercise when it includes more rigorous workout. Exercising is always more fun with a friend so physical activities that bring the heart rate up for at least 30 minutes a day are best done together.

  • Feed a healthier diet

Consult a veterinarian for food recommendations that are best suited to pet’s species, age, breed and lifestyle. Feed only the recommended amount, and limit treats to only a tenth of their daily diet. Make sure to choose pet food that are scientifically-formulated and nutritionally complete. US pet food, for example are labeled to be complete and balanced, which means these will contain nutrients at levels established by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO). AAFCO strictly regulates the US pet food industry to ensure that pet nutritional products are formulated for pets’ optimal health, and can provide all the nutrients they need for daily energy, bone and muscle development, a strong immune system, shiny coat and overall health.

  • Partner with a vet

Vets are pet parents’ partners in preventive healthcare for their pets. Vets play a critical role in maintaining pets’ good health so try to give pets at least two wellness visits a year. With regular vet checkups, vets can provide vaccinations, parasite prevention, and early detection of health problems for more effective treatment. In the Philippines, several companies now offer medical insurance for pets, which can help save on costs for urgent care or emergencies so it may be worthwhile to invest in coverage.

  • Enroll in behavior or obedience training

Obedience training benefits both pets and pet owners – for fur parents, they learn to set boundaries and better understand their pets’ needs; and for pets, they learn to interact safely with humans and other animals. It helps avoid temperament and behavior problems, and teaches pets to obey rules or follow instructions.

  • Spend more quality time

Going on trips with pets could be something new to try in 2023. With many beaches and vacation spots now welcoming furry travelers, pet lovers can share new experiences with their curious cat or adventurous dog. Even shopping malls and restaurants have become more pet-friendly so pets can be taken along on a day of retail therapy. But the best way to spend time with pets is to play with them in pooch parks around the city, some of which allow off-leash fun and games.

There’s no better time than now to become a better fur parent. With the unconditional love they give and their full trust in their humans, pets deserve to get the best care and attention.
