HKTB Launches new Campaign to Refresh Tourism in Sham Shui Po

The Hong Kong Tourism Board has recently launched another campaign to further promote local flavours in Sham Shui Po.

Named “Hong Kong Neighbourhoods – Sham Shui Po”, the campaign aims to help nurture a new generation of design and fashion talents and turn the district into a design and fashion landmark by creating synergy through blending and enriching the traditional garment and fabric wholesale and retail hub with design and fashion elements, thereby driving local tourism and boosting the local economy.

The project highlights five walking routes and 65 points of interest recommended by local personalities. Advised by well-known historian Dr Joseph Ting and three locals, the walking routes showcases the history, creative trends, authentic food and treasure hunting hotspots of the district.
Colorful decorations, inspired by the iconic red, white and blue woven plastic bags – often carried by grass roots residents – with graphics of buttons, zippers, and nostalgic toys, have been put up at various places such as MTR stations, lamp posts along major roads and streets, footbridges and railings, with a QR code that takes visitors to the board’s website for more detailed information on the district.
To promote the campaign globally, the HKTB has launched a micro-film series named Treasures of the Heart directed by up-and-coming director Steve Chan.

In the working-class neighbourhood of Sham Shui Po, everyone can enjoy an authentic Hong Kong market experience. Pick from two main product categories: electronics and clothes, as this area has markets catering to both. Apliu Street Flea Market is a popular jumble of new and second-hand computers, electronics and accessories. But even more pleasingly chaotic is the clothes market on Cheung Sha Wan Road, where fashion designers come to buy wholesale fabrics and everyone else rifles through the piles of street fashions in search of a hot find.

Visitors can go online or to HKTB Visitor Centres to get a copy of Sham Shui Po Self-guided Walks guidebook as well. If you want to experience Sham Shui Po to the fullest, this walking guide will show you the best things to see, eat, buy and do, from traditional temples built by early immigrants to concept stores and coffee shops that are bringing a new energy and attitude to this bustling district. Along the way, you’ll discover all the simple pleasures that give Sham Shui Po its distinct charm.
