Don Papa Rum: Bottling the Filipino’s Artistic Spirit

The Philippine art scene is vibrant as ever, with more artists exhibiting their craft away from traditional venues and moving into more unconventional spaces to reach a wider audience. This determination, coupled with support from various commercial and non-profit organizations, has become pivotal in making art more accessible.

Don Papa Rum finds kinship with the growing local art scene and strongly advocates the promotion of it where possible. Over the past few years, Don Papa has provided a platform for Filipino artists to showcase their talent through the Don Papa Art Competition and Art Canister program.
“Don Papa Rum is keen on helping promote Philippine arts to a wider audience because we believe in the local art scene and how it represents the contemporary Filipino today. We share a common dynamic with the art community that celebrates inventiveness, creativity, and individuality.” – Communications Director of Don Papa Rum Monica Llamas-Garcia
Indeed, Don Papa Rum has extended its full support to the increasing availability of avenues to showcase one’s art. In fact, the Philippines was considered ripe for its own version of the Biennale from Venice. The first ever Manila Biennale, which nests in the heart of Intramuros, has welcomed over 100 local and foreign artists who transformed the walled city into a vast art exposition. While its theme “Open City” is an allusion to a vulnerable period in Manila’s history during the war, for the Manila Biennale, this represents the openness of the city to a free exchange of ideas.
Fringe Manila, meanwhile, is a non-curated, uncensored arts festival that features art of varying ranges, styles, and forms. It showcases more contemporary expressions and fresh, daring, and groundbreaking material from independent creatives. More than anything, Fringe Manila, with the support of Don Papa Rum, has given artists a safe space for expression and opened opportunities for meaningful collaborations.
Probably the most awaited annual art event is the Art Fair Philippines, which showcases the best of the Philippines’ art scene. In a span of a few days, the festival shines the spotlight on Philippine Contemporary Art. With supplementary lectures and tours, the Art Fair Philippines is able to enhance appreciation of Philippine visual arts.
During the Art Fair PH 2018, Don Papa held an exhibit featuring its iconic Rum Hut and the Top 10 finalists of the 3rd Annual Don Papa Art Competition. Read more about the designs here: Top 10-3rd Art Competition Details
From the long lines and sold out shows, it is safe to say that all these events successfully bring art closer to the everyday consumer. From the confines of galleries, art has taken to a more public and accessible place and there’s no stopping it anytime soon.
Supporting art development is nothing new for Don Papa as the brand has been hosting its annual art competition for the limited edition Art Canisters, their secondary packaging for the holiday season. Conversely, the brand gives its patrons a firsthand experience of not only the product but also another perspective of Philippine culture that is not immediately known to them. Needless to say, Don Papa will continue to champion the growth of Philippine art, a key aspect of its identity as a proudly Filipino product.
