Siargao: Surfing the waves of a clichéd genre

By: Arlo Almorfe

In a genre that dominates the movie industry, we rarely see a romance film nowadays that have a unique story. Most people opt for tales about love, which is probably the most relatable among other categories. But as the number of romantic film grows, the lack of originality among many becomes noticeable. In a wave of clichéd ideas about love, Siargao surfs past right them.

A film by director-producer Paul Soriano and his first entry at the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF), Siargao features a stellar cast including Jericho Rosales, Erich Gonzales and Jasmine Curtis—Smith. Contrary to Direk Paul’s previous projects involving dark and serious approach, Siargao is a breath of fresh air in the director’s folio – a light-romance drama set in a peaceful island.

Siargao tells the story of two individuals on a quest to find themselves as they are en route to the island. Laura (Erich) is a known video blogger who recently suffered from a severe break-up.  On her way to Siargao, he met a prominent musician named Diego (Jericho), who happened to be a native there. The story revolves around the two until they met Abby (Jasmine), Diego’s former lover.

The film has this calming and magical effect, with visuals of the island of Siargao that display serenity. Being a light romance, Siargao doesn’t involve heavy drama scenes. And the outcome was unpredictable, contrary to the predictable outcomes of clichéd romantic movies. Nevertheless, the end of the story proved satisfying.

Aside from the compelling love story, the film also promotes the protection of the island of Siargao. Direk Paul and his team were aware of the possibilities of filming in Siargao, and took the opportunity of raising environmental awareness to protect and nurture the place.
TEN17P’s latest offering, Siargao, a MMFF 2017 entry directed by Paul Soriano and stars Jericho Rosales, Erich Gonzales and Jasmine Curtis-Smith is out on cinemas today.
