Southwoods Mall Celebrates Biñan Heritage with a Giant Puto Spectacle

The ceremonial cutting of the giant puto Biñan was led by Board Member Bong Bejasa,Southwoods Mall General Manager Patrick Ballesteros, Biñan Mayor Angelo Alonte, and Vice Mayor Dada Reyes.

A larger-than-life Puto Biñan took center stage at Southwoods Mall as the Puto Latik Festival officially kicked off, welcoming guests to a vibrant celebration of Biñan’s culture, flavors, and traditions. Marking the launch festivities was the ceremonial cutting of a giant Puto Biñan, a crowd-drawing spectacle that sparked wonder among guests while paying tribute to one of the city’s most iconic delicacies and culinary symbols.

Running from May 16 to 23, the Puto Latik Festival unfolds through a dynamic lineup of experiences that bring together food, creativity, and community—inviting guests to rediscover familiar traditions through fresh and engaging moments.

Throughout the festivities, students, families, food enthusiasts, and festivalgoers are welcomed into experiences that celebrate Biñan not only through its traditions, but also through the people who continue to shape and reinterpret them. More than a festival, the celebration reflects the character of a community whose stories continue to evolve through culture, talent, and shared experiences.

Among the festivities were the Interschool Flair Bartending Competition and Biñan’s Singing Idol, creating platforms for local talents to showcase their creativity and skills. The celebration continues with Biñan’s Finest: Family Soiree on May 23, bringing together local crafts and community services that celebrate entrepreneurship and homegrown pride while highlighting the people and communities behind Biñan’s local identity.

Culinary Creativity

Among the celebration’s most anticipated highlights was the Puto Latik Cook-Off, where tradition became a starting point for imagination. More than a culinary competition, it became a showcase of how familiar flavors can continue evolving through fresh ideas and new interpretations.

Participants transformed Puto Biñan into inventive creations that reflected originality in both flavor and presentation, demonstrating the delicacy’s flexibility beyond its traditional form. The competition highlighted not only the versatility of the dish itself, but also the creativity and craftsmanship of the communities behind each entry—proving that heritage can continue inspiring innovation while remaining deeply rooted in identity.

This year’s winning dishes reflected creativity in both execution and flavor. From sweet reinterpretations to savory creations, the dishes offered a reminder that traditions often continue to evolve through the people who choose to reinvent them.

Preserving Biñan’s Story

The Puto Latik Festival has grown into one of Biñan’s most meaningful annual celebrations, honoring two cultural symbols deeply woven into the city’s identity: Puto Biñan and the Maglalatik. Originally observed in February, the festival was later moved to the month of May to coincide with the feast day of San Isidro Labrador, the patron saint of farmers—reflecting the city’s agricultural roots and long-standing traditions.

At the center of the celebration is Puto Biñan, the city’s iconic steamed rice cake traditionally topped with cheese or salted egg and long regarded as a symbol of craftsmanship passed down through generations. The festival also pays tribute to the Maglalatik, a traditional folk dance performed with coconut shells that reflects movement, artistry, and the rich cultural heritage that continues to shape Biñan today.
