See What Others Can’t: Why You Shouldn’t Miss the Santa Maria Music & Film Festival 2025

Sta Maria Music and Filmfest 2023 Captured by Summer Smile Studio

Imagine watching films under a blanket of stars, surrounded by mountaintops and music that moves you. That’s not a dream—it’s the Santa Maria Music & Film Festival (SMMFF), and it’s back for its third year with more stories, more sound, and more soul than ever before.

Held high above the clouds in Santa Maria, Laguna, SMMFF is not your typical festival. It’s a creative escape, a cinematic sanctuary, and a celebration of voices from around the world—all set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Sierra Madre mountain range. For Gen Z, who crave authenticity, connection, and experiences that go beyond the screen, this is the place to be.

From Passion Project to Global Platform

SMMFF was born from the bold vision of Jennifer Maliwanag, a multi-awarded director and entrepreneur who turned her family’s mountain property into a haven for storytelling. What started in 2023 as a student-led initiative with just seven short films and live music has grown into a globally recognized event. In 2025, the festival features 39 films from 17 countries, showcasing everything from experimental shorts to powerful documentaries and musical narratives.

Jennifer’s mission? To help audiences “See What Others Can’t.” And that’s exactly what SMMFF delivers—films that challenge, inspire, and reflect the diverse realities of our time.

Stories That Speak to Us

This year’s lineup is a Gen Z dream: bold, emotional, and deeply personal. You’ll find stories of identity, activism, creativity, and healing. Some highlights include:

  • “K-Indi IDOL” from Korea, where a young woman disguises herself as a man to enter a male idol audition, flipping gender norms and chasing her dream.
  • “I Am a Halo-Halo” from the Philippines, a heartwarming tale of a third-culture Filipino reconnecting with his roots through food and family.
  • “Break the Silence”, a one-minute PSA from the U.S. that encourages mental health awareness and reaching out for help.
  • “MEMRA” from Russia, a music project created to support people with autism spectrum disorders.
  • “Chance Encounters” from Canada, blending storytelling and experimental music to explore how fleeting moments with strangers can change us.

Whether you’re into indie vibes, social justice, or just want to feel something real, SMMFF’s film selection hits different.

Music Meets Mountains

It’s not just about film. SMMFF is also a celebration of music—from live performances to music-driven documentaries. This year’s entries include:

  • “Jamcation”, a story of family and rhythm coming together across continents.
  • “Greensky Bluegrass – Find Ourselves Lost”, a raw look at a band recording in Iceland.
  • “Love Wins in the USA”, a pop anthem that reminds us love always finds a way.

With music echoing through the ridgeline and the sky turning violet at sunset, every performance becomes a memory.

The Vibe: Nature + Creativity

Held at the Santa Maria Open Air Cinema, the venue itself is part of the magic. Think panoramic views of Mt. Banahaw, Mt. Cristobal, and Laguna de Bay. Add crisp mountain air, cozy layers, and a refillable water bottle (because yes, it’s plastic-free), and you’ve got the ultimate aesthetic.

This isn’t just a festival—it’s a curated outdoor experience. Organizers guide guests through travel logistics, weather prep, and mountaintop etiquette, making sure everyone feels welcome and ready.

Why You Should Go

  • It’s free (with advance registration).
  • It’s inclusive—celebrating voices from all backgrounds.
  • It’s immersive—a break from the algorithm and a dive into real stories.
  • It’s inspiring—whether you’re a filmmaker, musician, or just someone who loves good vibes.

Plus, the organizing team is stacked with creatives who get it. Festival Director Jennifer Maliwanag leads with heart. Producer Rex Lopez brings global experience from Netflix and Amazon Prime. And Communications Lead Jerico Maliwanag ensures every detail—from visuals to on-ground experience—is on point.
