Designed to provide 24/7 surveillance of your home, security cameras are being used for much more than only filming robberies, thefts, and other crimes. Like myself, many people use their webcams to monitor their pets during the day, while others would do the same for their babies at night.
The TP-Link Tapo C225 is a reliable piece of equipment with lots of neat features and performs flawlessly. I’ve tested the cameras over the last five days using my very tight specifications in accordance with what I wanted.
The camera is easy to set up. It can be used both indoors and outdoors. It can be installed on a wall or ceiling, but it can also be set down on a table. Basically, it works as long as there is a power outlet nearby. And once in place and powered on, you’ll just need your phone and the Tapo app, follow the in-app instructions to easily set up within minutes.
For this unit, TP-Link has chosen a bolder white and black color scheme and a more cylindrical design. This design allows for a physical privacy mode, which rotates the lens so that it is blocked by the camera’s housing, as opposed to a basic electronic privacy shutter, which merely instructs the camera to stop streaming or recording. Additionally, there is a button on the front of the camera’s housing that enables and disables privacy mode without requiring you to launch the Tapo app.
The Tapo C225 is a compact IP camera that pans 360 degrees. The camera can pan, tilt, and zoom remotely. But this security camera has many intelligent features built in that enable dependable offline operations and intelligent “AI” characteristics that enable a variety of warnings. Its Smart Motion Tracking can track and follow a subject, keeping it within the camera’s field of view.
It is smart enough to identify people, pets, vehicles and other motions while also recognizing abnormal sounds such as baby crying and glass breaking, notifying users as needed – thanks to its Smart AI Detection and Notification feature.
I also like its Sound and Light Alarm that triggers light and sound effects to frighten away unwanted visitors. Meanwhile, the high-sensitive Starlight Sensor captures higher-quality images even in low-light conditions.
For cameras with night vision, the IR LED light is usually red. For the Tapo C225, switch it to a less distracting blue Led for night vision. All these features can be adjusted via the Tapo app. The camera is fast to respond to directional changes and prompts to capture still images and video footage. I did a few samples and downloaded them to see the format and bit rate.
When it comes to the camera quality, you may expect up to 2K QHD (2560 1440 px), which produces clear, realistic video. Although the frame rate is only 15 frames per second, it is more than sufficient for most individuals. Overall, the camera offers clear video quality.
With built-in microphones and speakers, the Tapo C225 allows you to communicate with anyone in the room where the camera is located. Use this at your front door, it can be useful if you have a delivery at home. After adjusting the volume, the speaker works perfectly fine. And the microphone is very clear and sounds decent.
The camera also offers flexible storage choice as you can save recorded videos on the MicroSD card or by using Tapo Cloud recording available on a subscription basis.
To be honest, it is difficult to identify any significant drawbacks of this security camera. I haven’t yet discovered any security camera that is so ideal for keeping an eye on my pet. The only downside of this camera, I believe, is its not so most discrete design. But if the the aim is to provide security, its physical presence would scare off most intruders.
