Gateway Gallery celebrates PH independence with Map to Freedom exhibit

To coincide with the 124th celebration of Philippine Independence, Gateway Gallery mounted an exhibit titled Map to Freedom that presents the development of cartographic visualization of the Philippines from the 1500s to the present time.

In partnership with the Philippine Map Collectors Society (PHIMCOS), Map to Freedom presents two cartography exhibits: Putting the Philippines on the Map, which is a fine representation of how the archipelago was presented by European cartographers; and Mapping Our Liberty, an edgy collection of artworks that utilize the Philippine map as part of art-making.

The exhibit partner, the Philippine Map Collectors Society (PHIMCOS), was established in 2007 by a small group of enthusiasts in Manila for collectors of antique maps and prints in the Philippines. It is a non-stock, non-profit organization, committed to disseminating its members’ enthusiasm for maps and prints, and to educating the public about the importance of cartography.

This crowd-sourced exhibit compiles a group of artists who are aware of the current socio-political issues of the country and incorporated the Philippine map in their messaging.

In addition, Gateway Gallery featured the careful mapping of our country’s flora and fauna through KulturaSerye’s Lupang Hinirang – Our National Heritage on July 2. Then on July 9, All Mapped Out! will be having Ambeth Ocampo as a guest speaker as he will discuss the details of the Murillo Velarde map, and why it was considered the “holy grail” of the Philippine cartography.

The Map to Freedom exhibit runs from June 12 to July 17, 2022.
