India’s Apollo Hospitals Commemorates 35 successful Liver Transplant in Pinoy Kids

Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals Delhi today celebrated the 35 successful Pediatric Liver Transplant in Filipino children in the last 28 months at a Thanksgiving program held at Fairmont Hotel in Makati City.

At the thanksgiving program, Apollo Hospitals thanked Ms. Nina P. Mahler, representing BILD Foundation for helping with funding and Mr. Rex Daryanani, President, Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce (PHIL) for his support.

Apollo Hospitals Delhi has emerged as the preferred destination for liver transplantation. The said hospital in India had performed the first successful pediatric liver transplant in India in 1998. Sanjay, the first child in India to have been successfully transplanted at the age of 22 months, is now a medical student leading a normal life 20 years later.

Dr. Anupam Sibal, Group Medical Director, Apollo Hospitals Group and Senior Pediatric Gastroenterologist & Hepatologist, Apollo Hospitals, Delhi said: More than 3,300 liver transplants have been performed at Apollo of which 337 were in children. We have transplanted patients from 44 countries,” he added.

Apollo Hospitals has performed the most complicated of liver transplants, combined liver-kidney transplants and multi-organ transplants. It has also performed liver transplants in patients who do not have blood compatible donors.

The Indian Ambassador to Philippines, His Excellency, Mr. Jaideep Mazumdar was present as the event Chief Guest. “It gives me immense pleasure to see the smiles on the faces of families with children who have received a new life through a liver transplant. India has emerged as a preferred global destination for medical travel,” he said.

Parents spoke of their experience at Apollo Hospitals and were accompanied by their children who were full of energy in stark contrast to their condition before a liver transplant with yellow eyes and bloated bellies. Representatives of various foundations, LITRO Babies, Liver Transplant Movement, Liver Babies, HOPE, Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce were present at the function.
