The story of Vipp
It began in 1939 as a love story…
‘Holger’, said Marie. ‘I need a waste bin for my salon. Can you make me one?’.
These words mark the beginning of Vipp. The year was 1939, and Marie had opened a salon in the small
Danish town of Randers. Her husband, Holger Nielsen, had a modest steel workshop. Holger didn’t know
the word ‘design’, but as a metal smith, he knew what a high quality tool is. With this in mind he made
Marie a bin that works and that very few people will ever wear out.
About Vipp
The Vipp story begins in Denmark in 1939 with a bin for Marie. Holger Nielsen, a young metalworker crafts a sturdy, pedal-controlled bin for his wife’s hair salon. Over the next 50 years it becomes a permanent object in Danish clinics. Today, still family-driven and family-owned, Vipp has grown into a large portfolio of industrial design products spanning from kitchen and bathroom accessories to lamps
and to complete kitchens. In 2009, the bin was accepted into the permanent design collection at the MoMA in New York.
