Huawei Mate 10: The AI Smartphone

Artificial Intelligence is set to be the next big buzzword in smartphones industry. Surely you know the term AI, and it is set to be used by phone manufacturers to try and better predict how you use your device and use that info to optimize your phone to perform better. And that’s the major fresh upgrade bundled in with the new Huawei Mate 10.

The Huawei Mate 10 offers a unibody made of metal and glass 150.5×77.8×8.2mm and 186 grams, with rounded lines that feels comfortable in the hand. Huawei comes on the super-wide screen train with FullView, its brand of near bezel-less displays: 5.9-inch IPS LCD (2560×1440 pixels, 499 PPI).
The phone is Huawei’s first phone to run Android Oreo software, and has the new version of Huawei’s own overlay – Emotion UI 8, which changes the look and gives you some extra added features, like the smart tips to help optimize the way you use your phone.
It’s new 8-core Kirin 970 chipset is likely to be the company’s best yet; using Huawei’s new AI technology, which records the way you’ve used your phone in the past to better optimize how it works in the future. It works behind the scenes to better optimize the way everything on your phone works. Huawei has added a neural processing unit (NPU), designed to accelerate machine learning and AI tasks.

During its local launch, machine learning and AI were the highlight of the presentation and the elements that should distinguish the new Mate 10 from the competition. And in a simple test, it was shown to us that it’s much faster than the competition at processing images in quick succession. We also found the Mate 10 to be speedy in loading up apps.

As for the camera, there’s a 20MP monochrome sensor and a 12MP color one working together, each has an aperture of f/1.6 and that allow for far improved night time shooting. For taking quick shots, Huawei has included its hybrid autofocus technology, and the AI tech enables to detect motion through the sensor to optimize for the best shot.
AI also works behind the scenes of the Real-Time Scene and Object Recognition feature of the Mate 10 camera. It is smart enough to understand the current photo scene/subject and switches to a different preset by itself.
Say you’re taking a photo of this pastry tray, the Mate 10 will realize this and optimize the settings on your camera. The same goes for to 14 of these scene modes including landscape, selfies, animals, some light conditions and a few others. And when it does, it changes to the best mode – you don’t have to do anything other than shoot.

Then there’s AI active noise cancellation with phone calls. Your voice won’t be drowned out in calls made from a noisy environment. While not a big thing, it is handy.
Another new with the Mate 10 series is the ability to work in Desktop Mode via a cable link to a large display or TV. And the good thing is that you don’t need to buy an expensive dock.
The Mate 10 is animated by the 4000 mAh battery, with SuperCharge fast charging tech, which enables you to get from 0% up to almost 60% in an hour.  Lastly, it has 4GB RAM + 64GB storage + microSD slot (256GB max).
Verdict:
The AI processor, powerful new internals, bright and clear large display and huge battery size makes this one of the top phones to buy (P32,990 SRP) for those who are looking for a device that doesn’t stop or slow down.
