Global apparel retailer UNIQLO will launch the Haruki Murakami / Murakami Radio UT collection, a collaboration with globally popular author Haruki Murakami, on Monday, March 22, 2021. The collection will present the unique and creative world of Haruki Murakami through T-shirts with motifs from six of his best-known novels, as well as Murakami Radio, the music radio program he hosts in Japan.
The world of Murakami comes to UT through illustrations from his novels and radio program
Haruki Murakami has a huge collection of T-shirts stacked in cardboard boxes and has written about his favorite T-shirts and the stories behind them. This collaboration takes inspiration from the memorable phrases and striking cover designs of six of his novels that have been particularly praised in Japan and around the world (Pinball 1973, Norwegian Wood, Dance Dance Dance, Sputnik Sweetheart, Kafka on the Shore, and 1Q84) and incorporates the designs into T-shirts. The lineup also includes designs with illustrations of the cat featured on Murakami Radio, the music program that Murakami himself produces and hosts, and other items reflecting his unique sensibility.
Haruki Murakami
Born in Kyoto, Japan, in 1949, Murakami graduated from the First Department of Literature, Waseda University. His debut novel Hear the Wind Sing was published in 1979, and his novel Norwegian Wood (1987) became a best seller. Other notable works include Kafka on the Shore and 1Q84.
Murakami Radio
Murakami Radio is a popular radio program hosted by Murakami featuring music that he selects himself. It is broadcast on TOKYO FM and other stations in the JFN38 network, Japan.
